New Gmail Multiple Inboxes Kicks Ass

February 5th, 2009 No comments

The rate at which Google’s Gmail continues to roll out new labs has been holding nice and steady in recent days/weeks.

Today saw the roll-out of Multiple Inboxes, by far one of my top three favorite features, from one of their software engineer’s Octavian “Vivi” Costache. Here’s a little of what he said in his post:

“I started implementing a Labs feature in my 20% time that would help me (and you!) spend less time monitoring important messages that may end up getting filtered away. Starting today, you can try Multiple Inboxes, a Labs experiment which makes it possible to have more than one ‘inbox’ in your default Gmail view.”

I’ll be even happier to see this evolve to include a drag-and-drop feature, hopefully sooner than later. In fact, I’m surprised it wasn’t included with the first release since that kind of functionality is so common and expected these days.

No matter though, it’s still a step in the right direction. Many thanks to “Vivi” for this feature!

Inauguration Day

January 20th, 2009 No comments

Today was inauguration day for the 44th president of the US. Obviously.

It was interesting to watch through a wide range of channels: TV and Twitter mostly, RSS feeds, Google News, CurrentTV, etc. And for the first time that I recall seeing, satellite imagery’s been taken; an impressive view from space:

It was definitely an inspiring event, even if for nothing other than the scale of its production. From the crowd control and transpo logistics, to porta-potties and parking, it must have been a nightmare of an operation, no matter how well rehearsed.

One thing I didn’t hear mentioned about the inauguration ceremony was its environmental footprint and what steps, if any, the inauguration committee had or would take to mitigate this. Probably nothing. Not a great way to begin a presidency pushing for cleaner and green days, but then maybe it was beyond Obama’s control.

Still it would have been nice to hear of some initiative to address this too.

Tristan and I were hoping the delivery would be today as the contractions started coming on around 3 and have been holding steady on and off since then. But so far no dice. Just a lot of time watching the inaugural coverage, the clock and Twitter.

Anyway, many wishes for safe travels to everyone who’s made the trek to DC!

2008: A Year of Cultivated Blogging

December 31st, 2008 No comments

I just took a quick look and count of the year in blogging here on my blog and see that I’ve posted 97-times (not including this…my 98th ;) . Not bad, not super-prolific, but still a decent count for my first determined year to represent my life, times and thoughts here consistently.

I’m very eager to press onwards in 2009 with all the new mediums I’ve enabled over the year: Flickr, Instinct phone, Posterous, etc.

I’ve still got a few things to configure but am comfortable moving ahead with what I’ve got enabled, as they stand now.

My biggest goal here in the coming year is to really widen the breadth of content I post here. I’ve really wanted to amp up my writing, in terms of detail, content, etc. and have yet to break through to another level of writing. And on a related note, hope to cultivate a greater following in readership and commentators.

I also hope to increase the size of my Adsense checks and the frequency with which they arrive. ;)

I’m confident I’m on the right track building my readership and cultivating greater skill and interest here. Connected social network outlets like my Facebook and Tribe profiles are furthering my efforts in this.

As blogging and its culture, technology and general popularity continue to grow and evolve, I’m confident that I’ll continue on the same path. I look forward to the journey.
