Another Failed Blog Upgrade

November 24th, 2008 No comments

I’ve tried twice in the last two weeks to make a much needed upgrade to my blog.

Unfortunately, there are several factors contributing to this failure, the first of which is become frustratingly complicated: I can’t connect to Network Solutions.

That in and of itself created these series of headaches:

1. D&E Communications – My ISP who told me the first time I contacted them, that the issue pertained to “users in the 610 area code have been assigned a dynamic IP address are being blocked by a third party vendor, Savvis.net.”

2. Savvis.net – has failed to respond to my support ticket (submitted four days ago).

3. D&E Communications – Again, my ISP told me it was someone else’s problem, this time blaming Network Solutions, telling me to call them and open a trouble ticket.

3. Network Solutions – NetSol asked me what D&E thought they’d be able to do since they’re not my ISP (to which I agreed wholeheartedly). They took my IP address anyway and opened a TT saying they’d look into it further, after first checking to see if I’d somehow been DNS blacklisted (which I haven’t).

Secondly, is that in addition to being unable to access my NetSol admin account, I can’t delete my current WordPress theme.

So until I resolve the ISP/NetSol issues, I’m stuck with what you see. Hopefully I’ll finally get this resolved soon, though most not likely until after the Thanksgiving holiday weekend.

Update 11.25.08 2:12pm EST: Called D&E back and was told again that it was specifically an issue with Savvist.net and that there’s nothing they can do about it. So I’ve hit up my sisters ISP, Service Electric, to get into my NetSol account, and deleted the troublesome theme; I’ll upload a new theme later if my 3rd upgrade attempt fails tonight.

Going West Again?

November 21st, 2008 1 comment

So we haven’t even been here three months and it looks like we’ll be headed back to Cali.

This will be the third time I’ve moved there, hopefully it sticks and I’m happy with it all this time. I have my misgivings about making the move, honestly, but Tristan is completely unhappy with life here in PA and therefore my life is kind of miserable for it. Granted, I really do miss it there…but I’ve just really started to relax and unwind.

There’s still a lot that could happen between now and February when we’d most likely be making the return trip, so maybe it won’t come to pass anytime soon. But who knows, maybe it will and it will all work out for the best.

A Special Day of Remembrance

November 18th, 2008 No comments

Today is a special day for Tristan, as it was her father’s birthday.

He passed away when she was eight years old and is forever a part of who she is. She feels especially distanced from me and where we’re living now and is sad that our boy will never know a great number of her family, including her dad, who’ve passed before his birth.

It’s a shame that he’ll never know his mother’s father for sure. But through her, he’ll remember all the best parts of him and her grandparents.

The Samsung-Sprint Instinct Phone

November 17th, 2008 No comments

I’ve been using the the Instinct for about a month or so now and I have to say, it’s definitely no iPhone.

And while most devout Apple/Mac/iPhone users would say “duh, I could have told you so”, I knew that in advance when purchasing it; I just thought it would have been a little more user-friendly and intuitive. And with a name like “Instinct” you’d think it would be, but it’s not. At all.

I mean it’s not at all hard to figure out how to use but there’s just some really basic functionality to its features that isn’t there and I really fail to comprehend how they could have overlooked some of these things before the product launched to the public.

Take for instance, the power-lock key: this should easily lock or unlock the phone, but it doesn’t and even after over a months use, still fumble to do so without powering down the phone. The same goes for removing the battery cover on the back, if you don’t figure out the proper removal method at first it can be a real chore to pry open. And once you get into the phone, everything from the touch sensitivity to tap-to-add functionality is inconsistent and disappointing throughout the varies functions within.

Even after I presumably get my $150 rebate I will still have paid half of what I would have paid for an iPhone and with far from the same level of quality and consistency as found with any of Apple‘s products.

The Email Signature Reduction Act

November 15th, 2008 No comments

Okay, so it’s not the latest act of legislature firing everyone up over yet another political controversy or anything remotely important, but all the same…the time has come for yet another mass email signature editing.

Signatures make for an interesting study and electronic versions are no exception. But lately I’ve been receiving comments about the length and content of my email signature. And they’ve given me pause to consider where I am in fact going with my career, self expression and life. And while the comment authors surely never intended for anything as serious as where my considerations have taken me, that’s what I’ve found myself reflecting upon none the less.

This latest edit will mark probably the sixth or seventh at least, in about as many years, maybe less.

Here’s the basic outline of the signature I was running with from the last year or so:

Jeff “Jedi” Wright / Chief Something or other…
Distinctivefabric.com: Your Source For Unbelievable Fabrics At Unbelievable Prices!
Greengurus.net: Green Solutions For Home & Business.
Lightninginabottle.org: A Magical Forest Adventure.

And here’s what I’ve just reduced it to:

Jeff “Jedi” Wright / 310.497.7882

As I disengage further and further from my life in California, I find less and less confidence in myself as an entrepreneur, cause lets face it: I’ve yet to create and launch my own successfull company from scratch. My birth date blesses me further with the uncanny ability of severe self-criticism, insecurity and a host of other traits at war with each other every second that I breathe.

So while that former list is a claim to be somebody, the latter is a frank admittance to what little I honestly amount to. Yet a sliver of hope lingers yet within me, as I catch myself striving to earn something more, inspired by the minimalism that now serves as my binary John Hancock.

Not only for my own selfish reasons but for the sake of my growing family, do I pray for this success.

Update 12.8.08: Man does a pregnant lady’s moods effect your own! Looks like we’re probably moving back to LA anyway.

Whoops, Did It Again

November 14th, 2008 No comments

So not only am I sick for the 2nd time in a month, I’ve added injury to illness to boot.

While working out at the gym two nights ago (not sure if my logic is right in this, but thought the exercise would help fuel my recovery from illness faster), I pushed myself too far while doing some leg exercises and pulled my groin muscles. If you’ve never done this before, you may not appreciate the condition this leaves one in. Having done so once before (right at the start of the sixth grade), I can honestly say it’s absolutely no fun. And if you’re wondering just what an injury like this entails, check this out.

Needless to say I’m off my gym schedule for a few days, most likely work continuing work on my friend/mentor’s barn and even less of a social hour (if that’s possible at this point here in PA). Add the constant, damp weather at the moment and you’re looking at (er, reading) one increasingly bored pup.

Superteam Killed My Inbox

November 12th, 2008 No comments

So after several years of some very fun and interesting discussions, I’ve had myself removed from one of The Do LaB’s core lists.

Living back here in a very antiquated-rural-farmland-backwater-kind-of-town, I’ve found it too challenging to carry on hearing of the latest plans for fun and adventure out west when I can’t join in. So I’m taking a breather from it until further notice.

Realistically, my presence will most assuredly be missed as equally little as my move here; time’s have changed and it’s time for me to as well.
