The Samsung-Sprint Instinct Phone

November 17th, 2008

I’ve been using the the Instinct for about a month or so now and I have to say, it’s definitely no iPhone.

And while most devout Apple/Mac/iPhone users would say “duh, I could have told you so”, I knew that in advance when purchasing it; I just thought it would have been a little more user-friendly and intuitive. And with a name like “Instinct” you’d think it would be, but it’s not. At all.

I mean it’s not at all hard to figure out how to use but there’s just some really basic functionality to its features that isn’t there and I really fail to comprehend how they could have overlooked some of these things before the product launched to the public.

Take for instance, the power-lock key: this should easily lock or unlock the phone, but it doesn’t and even after over a months use, still fumble to do so without powering the phone. The same goes for removing the battery cover on the back, if you don’t figure out the proper removal method at first it can be a real chore to pry open. And once you get into the phone, everything from the touch sensitivity to tap-to-add functionality is inconsistent and disappointing throughout the varies functions within.

Even after I presumably get my $150 rebate I will still have paid half of what I would have paid for an iPhone and with far from the same level of quality and consistency as found with any of Apple’s products.

The Email Signature Reduction Act

November 15th, 2008

Okay, so it’s not the latest act of legislature firing everyone up over yet another political controversy or anything remotely important, but all the same…the time has come for yet another mass email signature editing.

Signatures make for an interesting study and electronic versions are no exception. But lately I’ve been receiving comments about the length and content of my email signature. And they’ve given me pause to consider where I am in fact going with my career, self expression and life. And while the comment authors surely never intended for anything as serious as where my considerations have taken me, that’s what I’ve found myself reflecting upon none the less.

This latest edit will mark probably the sixth or seventh at least, in about as many years, maybe less.

Here’s the basic outline of the signature I was running with from the last year or so:

As I disengage further and further from my life in California, I find less and less confidence in myself as an entrepreneur, cause lets face it: I’ve yet to create and launch my own successfull company from scratch. My birth date blesses me further with the uncanny ability of severe self-criticism, insecurity and a host of other traits at war with each other every second that I breathe.

So while that former list is a claim to be somebody, the latter is a frank admittance to what little I honestly amount to. Yet a sliver of hope lingers yet within me, as I catch myself striving to earn something more, inspired by the minimalism that now serves as my binary John Hancock.

Not only for my own selfish reasons but for the sake of my growing family, do I pray for this success.

Whoops, Did It Again

November 14th, 2008

So not only am I sick for the 2nd time in a month, I’ve added injury to illness to boot.

While working out at the gym two nights ago (not sure if my logic is right in this, but thought the exercise would help fuel my recovery from illness faster), I pushed myself too far while doing some leg exercises and pulled my groin muscles. If you’ve never done this before, you may not appreciate the condition this leaves one in. Having done so once before (right at the start of the sixth grade), I can honestly say it’s absolutely no fun. And if you’re wondering just what an injury like this entails, check this out.

Needless to say I’m off my gym schedule for a few days, most likely work continuing work on my friend/mentor’s barn and even less of a social hour (if that’s possible at this point here in PA). Add the constant, damp weather at the moment and you’re looking at (er, reading) one increasingly bored pup.

Superteam Killed My Inbox

November 12th, 2008

So after several years of some very fun and interesting discussions, I’ve had myself removed from one of The Do LaB’s core lists.

Living back here in a very antiquated-rural-farmland-backwater-kind-of-town, I’ve found it too challenging to carry on hearing of the latest plans for fun and adventure out west when I can’t join in. So I’m taking a breather from it until further notice.

Realistically, my presence will most assuredly be missed as equally little as my move here; time’s have changed and it’s time for me to as well.

The Future of Green Gurus

November 11th, 2008

So it’s been about a year since I filed my corporation Green Gurus, LLC.

Not nearly as much has happened as I had hoped and thought would happen in that time. I sold a few green domain names, did a HD TV consultation for Marion Van Peebles Green House show, started up a solar powered server, and a few other interesting things, but it never got going the way I dreamed it would. This has been due to major considerations (or distractions):

1. Working half the year or more with The Do LaB
2. Preparing for my first baby (which has proven to be way more complicated than I’d ever planned on)

It’s been tough to get the team focused on anything together as they’ve all had their hands in a million other projects too. So much so that at this moment, instead of trying to grow it, I’ve decided to explore the possibility of an outright sale of the company. Hopefully these guys can lend me a hand and help make it happen. If not, I’ll be stuck paying $800 corporate tax every year until I pay off the current and past due taxes. It’s really a bit of a catch 22 and a damn shame.

I just really hope I can find a way to work all this out. And fast!

Update: I’ve posted in more professional detail as to my plans with this over on GG’s blog.

Updated Target Baby Registry

November 8th, 2008

I’ve just finished updating our Target baby registry with an more detailed listing of baby needs: https://www.target.com/registry/baby/QXZJRDKGT0YW/

After working a week and a half at my sister Deb’s in-home, day care service, I’ve come to see how much more is needed in the daily care of babies. It’s crazy how much goes into raising a baby, from the toys to safety gear, to feeding to sleeping, there’s just tons of stuff. And goddamn it, most of it’s made of plastic!

I’ve been searching for a comprehensive, green baby registry service, but haven’t had much luck. If I wasn’t already thinking and working on a million startups, I’d take this on too. Hmm, maybe I can convince my sister to incorporate that into her company…

At any rate, for now we’ll just have to live with the Target one.

Update: We now also have one at Babies ‘R Us.

Gmail Purge and Archive

November 8th, 2008

I’m behind on my monthly Gmail purge and archiving so have set aside everything else for a bit to catch up on it.

So sorry once-a-day blog posting, you’ve missed a beat. Will just have to do double-time to compensate for it later today or whenever after I’ve cleaned house.

MyElectionDay.com

November 5th, 2008

Yesterday’s post and political and historical events inspired me so much so that between the span of McCain and Obama’s speeches, I had:

0. Identified the model, theme and purpose for a political storytelling tool.
1. Registered the domain name: myelectionday.com.
2. Repointed the domain’s A record to my solar server.
3. Configured hosting of the domain on my solar server.
4. Selected, downloaded and installed a blog theme for the site.
5. Established its Twitter and Google accounts.
6. Wrote the welcome post and about page.
7. Invited a long list of friends and relatives to join the site and tell their stories.
8. Posted a slew of breaking news articles on the election, candidates and national/global reactions.

I was just so caught up in a fervor of creation that it seemed like a killer concept at the time, though now I’m not sure how it will carry forward. But maybe it will catch on, or maybe it could come to serve to some function in future elections. I don’t know what will happen but I know thoroughly enjoyed the creation process and felt it was my part to play. Just as some marched on our Capitol and others gathered in Grant Park, I expressed myself nearly instantly, virally and globally.

My 2008 Presidential Election Day

November 4th, 2008

Don’t really have much energy left today to post anything of any real depth.

Sitting back, relaxing after a long and tiring day helping watch six kids with my sister and mom, then the gym, then my weekly meet-up with my brother and friends at the local pub for our weekly half-price micro-brews and appetizers. Now watching the political news coverage with Tristan for the remainder of the evening, then some reading and much needed sleep!

And yes, I voted (for Obama and the rest on the PA ballot, Libertarian, for state Attorney General, Treasurer, etc.) today, early at about 7:30am: was in and out in under five minutes. Incidentally, this was my first vote cast in a presidential election, didn’t care to play the game in 2000/04 but now with a baby on the way and a vast number of other reasons, felt it appropriate to do so finally.

Political Paraphernalia

November 3rd, 2008

While this election season has now reached fever-screaming pitch throughout both parties and supporters efforts to convert each other, the collective mess abounds at nearly each and every corner of well, just about anywhere it seems.

I’ve been tracking and considering how all this will wrap up for a few weeks, but in the last few days have really questioned the likelihood of these devoted supporters devoting as much time to clean up as they have to canvassing their neighborhoods.

I for one, think each party’s candidate’s campaign should be held accountable for any residual mess left in their fight to win this presidential race.
